Gail Wilber, recently crowned Maine’s Outstanding Mom 2011, joined Caring Unlimited’s 10th Annual Atlantic Plunge on Saturday, January 1, 2011 at Gooch’s Beach in Kennebunk.
Gail’s participation in the America’s Outstanding Mom pageant and in the Atlantic Plunge was inspired by her close friend and Caring Unlimited board member, Kelly Howe. Gail wants to follow in the footsteps of Kelly, who was Mrs. Maine International 2010, in continuing the important work of combating domestic abuse.
Gail took the plunge in an evening gown and her crown and banner just as Kelly did last year. Kelly originated the idea of taking the plunge in full pageant attire, along with her daughter Morgan Curley, Miss Maine Teen United States 2009. Kelly fled to the Caring Unlimited emergency shelter almost 20 years ago, when Morgan was just a baby. Gail is honored to wear the same red evening gown that Kelly wore and plans on finding another queen to wear the gown year after year with the hopes of passing it forward for this important cause.
As a Sanford resident and also a domestic abuse survivor, Gail had already been involved with Caring Unlimited prior to entering the America’s Outstanding Mom pageant. She is presently a kid care worker at Caring Unlimited. Gail believes that every child deserves a safe and secure home life and that begins with providing support and services to parents who are domestic abuse victims. “I know first hand that domestic abuse breaks more than bodies…it breaks spirits, and until enough of us speak up and show zero tolerance, the cycle will never end” says Wilber.
